[Bookplate for Henry Mott by J. E. H. MacDonald] Black ink. Azure (blue) escutcheon charged with a argent (silver) crescent. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, an eight-point star and the originator's name. Below a waving banner displays the originator's Latin motto. All of the elements cited above are framed by a shield shaped border. Additionally, the paper is cut at skewed angles, causing the image to appear lopsided. 82. [Bookplate for Henry Torre] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon which is slightly askew, being tilted from the central vertical axis of the image. The escutcheon is parted per fess. In dexter chief sable (black), charged with a crescent above and a tower below, a bordure vair. In middle chief, azure (blue), embattled and counter-embattled, argent, with three sable roundlets. Above the partition charged with two stags proper tripping, and below with one stag proper, tripping. In sinister chief, argent, two bars, gules (red), in canton gules, charged with cross Moline, or (gold). In dexter base, barry of six pieces, or and azure, in canton, argent, charged with a chaplet. In middle base, sable (black), lion rampant. In sinister base, argent, sable with three lozenges, gules above, and four below. The rococo vegetative mantling above the escutcheon finishes on either side with a tassel and includes, at its center, a straight wreath charged with a gryphon passant situated atop a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's Latin motto, with his name printed below. 83. [Bookplate for Hermes Circulating Library] Textual bookplate printed in black ink and three fonts delineating terms for borrowing. One hand in blue ink. 84. [Bookplate for Hill’s Lending Library] Black ink on yellow pink paper with clipped corners. Capitalized serif-font followed with by a line of stylized bold block lettering with decorative serifs. Next line contains smaller bold serif font in sentence case. Text is then separated by a thin, centered line. Subsequent text written in capitalized, bold, sans-serif font. Below that is smaller, capitalized serif font that is then written in sentence case in the second half of the line. The next four lines use quotation marks to indicate repeat content with some sentence case serif font additions. There is then a line with some capitalized and some sentence case serif font, followed by the same four line pattern of quotation marks and sentence case font. Below that is a line of sentence case serif font. The next line uses capital letters for emphasis followed by sentence case serif font. There is a line of capitalized serif font followed by larger, sentence case bold serif font. The text is separated by a thin centered line. Below the line are capital letters in serif font followed by larger capitalization font in bold, then smaller non-bold capitalized text, then larger bold capitalized text. A shorter thin line separates the text. Below the line are four lines of sentence case serif font. Next is a line in capitalized serif font followed by a smaller, bold line of capitalized serif font. The last line is written in smaller, sentence case, serif font. 85. [Bookplate for Hood] This bookplate consists of a escutcheon, azure (blue) and a fret, argent (silver), with a chief, or (gold), charged with three crescents. The shield features an inescutcheon or, with a chevron sable (black), charged with three wildcat heads cabossed, two over one. Above the inescutcheon is another small escutcheon argent, with a human hand gules, indicating the status of Knight and Baronet. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, and the escutcheon is supported by a merman at dexter and a mermaid at sinister. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire achievement is bookplate owner's name. 86. [Bookplate for Howard Murray] In black ink on cream coloured paper. This bookplate depicts a sitting room with two chairs and a window looking out on trees, rolling hills and a body of water. A scroll at the base containing the originator's name is flanked by a pile of books. 87. [Bookplate for Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a lion statant guardant standing on a circular platform wrapped in a pointed ribbon decorated with four diamonds. Shield features sable and argent stripes. There is an argent bend featuring a decorative smaller shield that has several geometric borders with a demi-lion rampant in the center. The shield is charged with six crosses, three on each side of the bend. The crosses peter to a thin point at the bottom and the other parts of the cross divide into miniature cross shapes. The shield has dexter and sinister supporters, both lions rampant. The bases of the lions’ neck are decorated with a star. The lions are standing on a curling ribbon that features the motto, printed in capitalized sans serif font. Below the motto is the name of the bookplate owner printed in stylized gothic sentence-case font. Four squiggly arrows point towards the text from each side. 88. [Bookplate for Hugel] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a lion rampant holding a flower with three petals between its paws. The lion stands atop a crown with elaborate, feathery wings extending upwards to the left and right. The crown is round and flat and decorated with three diamonds across the front. The crown sits on the head of a baronet and knight helm. Elaborate, curling mantling extends to the left and right and down the bookplate, becoming blacker towards the ends. The shield is divided per cross. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with a lion rampant. The lion in the top left faces to the right, whereas the lion in the bottom right faces to the left. Like the lion in the crest, these lions hold a flower with three petals in their paws. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are argent with sable dots. They are each charged with three black diamonds, two over one. The diamonds have black shading on the right-hand sides. Below the shield, a curling ribbon with non-straight edges has the motto printed in black, capitalized, serif font. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate, black, large, sentence case, Gothic font with extensive curling decorations surrounding the text. 89. [Bookplate for Hugh Lyle Smyth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing an invected bend, azure (blue). The escutcheon is charged with two unicorn heads, gules (red) and erased, at dexter base and sinister chief ; the bend is charged with three lozenges, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a dexter closed helmet, which is topped by a ducal coronet and a unicorn head, gules and erased, with lozenge, ermine. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 90. [Bookplate for Humberside Collegiate Institute] This bookplate's design features a quartered escutcheon, gules (red), azure (blue), and or (gold). It is charged with an oil lamp, a maple leaf, an open book, and a beaver. 91. [Bookplate for J. H. Hagarty] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features an armoured arm holding on to a sabre. The arm is coming out of a crest-wreath. The shield is argent with a sable chief. The chief is charged with three white birds trussed. The bottom section of the shield is argent and charged with a tall, leafy tree. The tree has three roots extending out. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, block, sans serif white letters. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, cursive font. 92. [Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font. More text is printed below the name in smaller, black, capitalized, serif font. 93. [Bookplate for James Bruce MacKinnon] Black ink. A straight wreath is charged with a boar's head, erased, holding a deer's shank bone in its mouth. Below the boar's head waves a banner containing the MacKinnon family motto. 94. [Bookplate for James Hatch] In black ink, an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with two lions passant guardant, with their hind legs couped. Over the lions at the fess point is an inescutcheon parted per pale, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts) and ermines (field sable fur, powdering argent), a chevron sable (black) and argent (silver) with four lozenges ermine and ermines, between three fleur-de-lis argent, two over one. The crest is a lion cabossed on a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 95. [Bookplate for James John Joicey] This bookplate is printed on light brown paper with brown ink. It consists of an escutcheon argent (silver), and three diamonds in pale between two endorses in a crosshatch pattern. The escutcheon is charged with a pick-axe at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at three-quarter profile, indicating the status of peer. Upon the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a young man holding a pick-axe and lantern. Radiating from the wreath is elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Entire crest is contained within a border, with name of bookplate owner at bottom. 96. [Bookplate for James Maitland Hunt] In black ink, this bookplate contains an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with two dogs courant, and a chief, argent, with fox cabossed, between two hunting horns. Above, a helmet with mantling, and a crest of a lion's head erased, gorged. All set within a floral architectural border. 97. [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a ship’s steering wheel with stringy foliage extending from the left and leafy foliage extending from the right atop a crest-wreath. Shield is sable and party per fess. Top section is charged with a white cross in the center with a fleur-de-lis on either side. The bottom section is charged with a white ship steering wheel that is identical to the one in the crest. The motto is printed on curling ribbon below the shield in capitalized, serif, white block font with black outline. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name Is printed in sentence case, black, serif font. 98. [Bookplate for Jenkins] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a furry lion passant reguardant standing atop a castle tower. The castle tower is above a crest-wreath. Elaborate, curling, feathery black and white mantling extends from the top of the shield and expands out along the sides. The shield is divided per pale. The left section has a white background with black dots and is charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. The right section of the shield is charged with a bird perched on a tree branch growing out of the ground. There is no background except for the branch and ground that is lighter on top and darker at the bottom. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon below the shield. There is shading on the ends of the ribbon. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in a more stylized, paler, capitalized, black serif font underneath the motto. 99. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 100. [Bookplate for John Bonsall Porter] This heraldic bookplate is printed on cream paper with dark brown ink, and consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), charged with three church bells, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a helmet at three quarters profile in esquire form, with mantling radiating from it. Above the helmet is a straight wreath crested by the head of a lion in profile. Above the crest is a banner, with first Latin motto within.
